What is Autoimmune Disease?

Under normal conditions, immune cells are able to recognize the body's own tissues and do not attack them. However, when influenced by internal or external factors—such as environmental triggers or genetic predispositions—the immune system can become dysregulated. In other words, the body begins to produce antibodies that mistakenly target and attack its own healthy cells. This abnormal immune response can damage tissues and organs, potentially leading to functional impairments.

Common autoimmune diseases include Type 1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Graves' disease, and myasthenia gravis, among others.

Current clinical treatments primarily involve the use of corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents, and anti-inflammatory medications to manage symptoms and slow disease progression. While these therapies can be effective to some extent, a subset of patients shows limited response. Moreover, immunosuppressive treatments suppress the entire immune system, leading to significant side effects and often requiring lifelong management.
